I will discuss the DOE ASCR-funded joint project between Sandia, IBM Research, Bell Labs, and Vita Nuova Corporation to port the Plan 9 research operating system to the Blue Gene computers, both L and P. I will describe the reasons for doing the work, and our results to date. Plan 9 allows us to deliver a new computing model, replacing the old card-deck-oriented batch model with a rich interactive model, in which the user's laptop can be an integral part of the application, sharing files and providing direction in a way not possible on other operating systems. If possible, and the BG/P maintenance schedule and time allow, I'll do a quick demo.
