SCEC Petascale Earthquake Simulation

An essential component to advance our knowledge of the ground shaking during large earthquakes is regional-scale high-resolution 3D seismic modeling at increasingly higher frequencies. Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) Community Model Environment (CME) collaboration has developed a highly scalable application targeting petascale earthquake hazard calculation. We present some optimization techniques used for scaling up to hundreds of thousands processor cores. We also highlight the computational and I/O challenges for supporting SCEC very-large scale wave propagation simulations on TeraGrid and INCITE petascale supercomputers.
